Badoo Survey Examines Dating Attitudes Across the USA

NEW YORK, October 28, 2016 -- Badoo, the world’s largest dating app, is today releasing survey findings that highlight attitudes pertaining to online dating and how it varies across the United States.

The study polled 1,000 Badoo users to explore dating differences across regions regarding gender, age, and sexuality.

One-third (33%) of American singles admitted they feel enhanced pressured to find a date or significant other during the holiday season. Gay males (45%) reported feeling considerably more pressure from family and friends to have a partner during this time, while only 37 percent of bisexuals, 32 percent of lesbians, and 30 percent of straight people feel the same.

Additional survey findings include:

  • First Dates on a Budget: West Coasters prefer to have a cheaper first date! Interestingly, 20% of respondents, each from California, Wyoming, and Arizona, shared that they are only willing to spend $10 or less on the first date. Regarding gender, 44 percent of men admitted that money is no object to spend on the first date, while only 24 percent of women said the same.

  • Safety Comes First: Just over six in 10 singles (62%) admitted to “checking out” a prospective date online through social media channels before meeting in person, the majority being between the ages of 18-24 (89%). The biggest online dating vetters, found to be the most likely to conduct an internet search on a potential date before meeting in person, reside in West Virginia (86%), Vermont (83%) and Utah (81%).

  • How Old is That Photo: Surprisingly, a third (33%) of U.S. singles confessed to using outdated photos (photos that are at least three years old) in their dating profile. When it comes to sexuality, lesbians (50%) and gay males (45%) are the highest populations using outdated photos. In contrast, one in three (33%) straight people admit to doing the same.

“Online dating has become the norm and as a result, transformed how and in what capacity people meet. After surveying millions of Americans about their online dating habits, it appears that singles are becoming better at showing good judgment in their online dating adventures,” said Badoo Dating Expert Joelle Hadfield. “ Online dating has lost much of its stigma, and a majority of Americans, especially in major cities such as New York and San Francisco, say that online dating is the best way to meet a prospective partner, in general, it is much more culturally acceptable than it was a decade ago. At Badoo, we’re all about our user experience, creating new features that provide singles with the tools they need to to have an authentic, enjoyable, and safe dating experience.”
