Napoli named Italy’s “Most Nocturnal City” in New Study by Badoo.com

Napoli named Italy’s “most nocturnal city”; Milano and Torino rank joint second: new study

• Cairo is “world’s most nocturnal city” but New York, “the city that never sleeps”, ranks just 32nd: study

• Ranking of world’s most nocturnal cities is based on analysing 120 million online interactions

• Madrid is Europe’s most nocturnal capital; Roma ranks eighth

• Malaga in Spain is Europe’s most nocturnal city

Napoli is today named Italy’s “most nocturnal city” by the researchers behind a global study of the world’s most nocturnal or “24-hour cities”. Milano and Torino share second place, followed by Firenze, Catania and Roma.

The same study ranks Roma as Europe’s eighth most nocturnal capital, after Madrid in first place, followed by Brussels, Istanbul, Belgrade, Lisbon, London and Paris.

The first ever ranking of the world’s most nocturnal cities is based on analysing 120 million online chats and flirts made over two months on Badoo (www.badoo.com), the world’s largest social network for meeting new people, with 122 million users across 180 countries.

Badoo’s study names Cairo, the capital of Egypt, “the world’s most nocturnal city” and Malaga on Spain’s Costa del Sol as Europe’s most nocturnal. But New York, famed as “the city that never sleeps”, ranks just 32ndth, well behind London, Paris and Rome.

“Some people perhaps think that Milano must be Italy’s most nocturnal city”, says Lloyd Price, Badoo’s Director of Marketing. “But the result was very close. Online activity in Napoli peaks at around 11.30 pm, just 15 minutes later than in both Milano and Torino.”

Badoo’s rankings are based on its own “Nocturnal Index” for each city. This combines measurement both of peak times for chatting and flirting and of a “Night/Day Ratio”, comparing online activity levels by night and by day.

In fact, Napoli, Milano and Torino all share the same “Night/Day” ratio but Napoli ranks top because it has the latest peak activity time (11.30pm), compared to 11.15 pm in Milano and Torino.

Roma is the only other city with the peak time of 11.30 pm, which is two hours later than in, for example, Genova, and almost two hours later than in Palermo (9.45 pm) and Bologna (9.45pm). But it only ranks sixth overall, due to having a lower “Night/Day ratio”.

While southern cities tend to be more nocturnal across the world, five of Italy’s 10 most nocturnal cities are in the north, compared to four in the south, with one, Roma, in the centre.

The peak activity time in Cairo is nearly 1 am (00.45 am), almost two hours later than Napoli or Roma (11.30 pm), and three hours later than in New York (9.45 pm).

While there are six Spanish cities among the world’s 10 most nocturnal cities, and Madrid emerges as Europe’s most nocturnal capital, not one Italian city ranks in the world top 20.

Napoli, which is also Italy’s most densely populated city, is the world’s 23rd, most nocturnal city, followed by Milano and Torino in joint 24th place, Catania in 26th and Roma in 27th. [Firenze does not have enough users to feature in the world rankings.]

Palermo shares 32nd place globally with New York, Marseille in France and Montreal in Canada.

But Italy as a whole is less nocturnal than most European countries, including even most northern European ones.
